Email scam alert

Two of the SPH Department Chairs were targeted by email scams yesterday evening. A fake email address formatted similar to the Chair’s actual HSC email address was used. Everyone in their respective departments received an email from them requesting help. Anyone who responded to the request was asked to purchase something, like Google Play Gift Cards. Please be alert and pay close attention to the “To” and “From” addresses before responding to emails.

How to Identify This Particular Scam

• The “From” address is formatted: username.hsc.wvu.edu@gmail.com
• The “Subject” says: Urgent request
• The first question in the body of the email is: Available?
