Weekly Research Updates and Opportunities: March 28, 2018
Below are this week’s research announcements, awards and opportunities from the School of Public Health Offices of Research and Development.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Health Care Programs Received Major Boost from Omnibus Spending Bill - Health care programs are expected to benefit from a major boost in federal spending as part of the two-year, $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill Congress is considering this week. The spending bill, which was passed by the House on Thursday and set for consideration by the Senate, includes a $3 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health, bringing its budget to $37 billion for fiscal 2018. It also features a $10 billion increase for the Department of Health and Human Services over its fiscal 2017 budget, to $78 billion. The bill diverts nearly $4 billion more into the opioid addiction crisis, which President Donald Trump declared a public health emergency last fall and this week announced an initiative to combat. https://www.usnews.com/news/health-care-news/articles/2018-03-22/health-care-programs-to-receive-major-boost-from-omnibus-spending-bill
Pilot partnership to help find private support for unfunded applications - The Online Partnership to Accelerate Research (OnPAR) is accepting applications to provide funding for unfunded research. OnPAR provides innovative and exceptional research applications with a second opportunity for funding. The goal of OnPAR is to match quality biomedical research projects with priority areas of interest of private foundations, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies and/or other private biomedical research funders. OnPAR will eventually provide access to a global pipeline of research projects that can either supplement internal projects or provide innovative new ideas for future medical products. Visit the OnPAR website for more information and instructions on the application process.
HSC Tweak My Aims Service - This is a reminder that the Office of Research and Graduate Education continues to provide the “Tweak My Aims” service. PI's are invited to provide the specific aims page and biographical sketch to Valerie Lemasters who will forward to 2-3 faculty for immediate input. Suggestions are returned to the PI within 5 working days. Please note this is not intended to replace the standing internal study sections meetings organized by the HSC but rather augment it through early and rapid feedback on two critical pieces of any grant application. It is NOT intended to provide detailed content critique but rather a sense of how effectively the PI has captured the proposed work as being compelling, innovative and impactful. Reviewers are asked to make comments on general readability, clarity, connectedness of the aims to overall goal, etc. to provide pointers that will strengthen these two elements. Contact Val Lemasters with any questions.
HSC Graduate Student Appreciation Celebration and Rising Stars Recognition event - The HSC Graduate Student Appreciation Celebration and Rising Stars Recognition event will take place on Tuesday, April 3rd from 4:00pm-5:00pm in the Pylons/Learning Center Commons Lobby. This event helps us celebrate our graduate students and our faculty that go above and beyond. All graduate students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Cake and pizza will be served.

NIJ FY18 Research on Reducing Violence in Communities - The purpose of this solicitation is to support research to produce sustainable community-level reductions in violence. NIJ seeks to develop scientific evidence and build practical knowledge of the factors that contribute to achieving enduring violence reductions in communities. NIJ is interested in receiving proposals for research with both empirical and theory-building elements that will lead to practical and generalizable recommendations. These recommendations should inform community-focused efforts to produce substantial and lasting violence reductions in communities that have suffered from persistently high levels of violence. Request for Proposals: Generating Evidence that Contributes to Increasing Access to Medication Abortion in the United States - The Society of Family Planning (SFP) was established to advance sexual and reproductive health through research, education, advocacy, and professional development. The grantmaking arm of the organization, the Society of Family Planning Research Fund (SFPRF), was established in 2011. SFPRF aims to provide financial support to scholars working at the forefront of abortion and contraception and to support research studies that ultimately lead to improvements in reproductive health and reductions in unjust disparities. The overarching question driving this RFP is: What would it take to increase access to medication abortion in the United States--and how might empirical evidence lead to changes in clinical practice, public policy, health services delivery, or cultural understandings? We seek research proposals reflecting disciplinary, methodologic, epistemological, and geographic variation. SFPRF anticipates funding a variety of projects ranging in size, scope, and purpose. Application Due Date(s): Concept Papers due by April 10, 2018. Full Proposals Due by August 3, 2018. https://www.societyfp.org/Research-and-grants/Applying-for-grants.aspx

Existing Educational Program Evaluation Grants - The Brady Education Foundation seeks to close the achievement and resulting opportunity gap between children living in under-resourced and/or under-represented communities and other children. The Foundation pursues its mission by promoting collaboration between researchers and educators via the funding of program evaluations in education that have the potential of informing public policy and private funding. The Foundation is particularly focused on the evaluation of programs that are consistent with a strength-based approach and show promise of being feasible, accessible, effective and sustainable. Application Due Date: Stage 1 Proposals Due by August 1, 2018 or December 1, 2019. http://www.bradyeducationfoundation.org/applicationguidelines.html
